The Paradox of Choice

Often we will meet students who are confident in their ability and are on track to achieve a high ATAR. Their subjects are a mix of humanities, sciences and math - they have the pre-requisites and capabilities to go in whatever direction they choose. How can we help them transform their academic success into career success.

The dreaded question of ‘what are you going to do after year 12?’ can lead high achievers feeling overwhelmed. We introduce them to the concept of the paradox of choice. It is not uncommon that when faced with too many options we can feel slightly paralysed, this is known as the paradox of choice. Too many choices and you can’t make one.

Law or Medicine usually come up in the conversation, why wouldn’t you go down one of these prestigious paths? Medicine is a rewarding career but the years of study and the dedication required is not a decision to be taken lightly, it is a BIG commitment at a young age. Law, as adults we know can lead to other things but what? And weren’t there more law graduates than entry level positions available? What about the other areas of study that they love and have not yet explored.

We explore the concept of career as part of your life that includes both your formal and informal learning and paid and non-paid work. It encompasses you as a whole person. We explore broad areas of interests and narrow it down into areas of industry and looked at all the different careers that might come off that area of interest. We help these students look at these decision from all angles so they can transform their schooling academic success into career success.
